The horizontal white flag

Troubled relationship. There are few things more heavily carrier of symbolism, and nationalistic ideas than flags. The singularity of flagpoles, only carrying one flag, promotes the idea of borders, of division between different states and different people. The flag gathers but also divides.

The first flags were used to assist military co-ordination on battlefields, and bright recognizable colours and patterns were used to recognize your own in the heat of battle. The standing vertical flag is potent and aggressive, swaying in the wind, promoting itself.

The project is a new unifying white “flag” which is horizontal; calm and reflecting, also making a light roof for shelter – proposing more humane and common values between us. Its dimensions are obscured in effect of trying to connect as many flagpoles as possible.
